Mythology #1

Sati, the youngest daughter of Daksha Prajapati married God Siva against the wishes of her father.  Daksha initiated a great Yajna, and invited all the kings and gods, but did not invite Siva with the prime motive of insulting him. Sati came to know about the yagya and requested Siva to attend the yagya as well as allow her to attend the yagya. Siva refused her request saying that it is inappropriate to attend a function without an invitation. Siva allows Sati to go to attend the Yagya with Nandi and parivara but refused to accompany her.  At the Yagya, Daksha insults Sati, telling that she attended an uninvited ceremony and Siva is an atheist and cremation dweller.  Sati felt deep remorse and curses Daksha that the wrath of Siva would destroy him and his empire.  Unable to bear further humiliation Sati jumps into the sacrificial fire.

Siva, deeply pained upon hearing of his wife’s death will be very angry.  Siva destroys the yagya with his third eye.  In order to avoid further wrath of Siva, Yagya took the form of Deer and flew into the sky  Siva as Kala, or the lord of time, pursues the Yagya and kills him.  Yagya’s deer head was placed among the stars as Mrigasira nakshatra and is known as the emblem of sacrifice.
